Save The Graves – 2019

Celebrating Early El Dorado County Pioneer Families

Save the Graves inaugural event was held in Placerville Union Cemetery on October 26, 2019. Guests enjoyed portrayals of nine noteworthy El Dorado County figures. Performances were repeated throughout the day.

MOLLIE CARPENTER
1866 – 1923

One of a very small band of pioneer female journalists who eventually became the editor and publisher of the Mountain Democrat newspaper.

CARLO GUISSEPPI CELIO (1833 – 1918) & MARIA GIAMBONI CELIO (1832 – 1890)

Swiss immigrants, dairy farmers and lumber business owners. They ran cattle through downtown Placerville.

WILLIAM CRADDOCK
1859 - 1920

Blacksmith and teamster. Discovered a 37-pound gold nugget at what is now Gold Bug Park and Mine, a Placerville historic landmark.

CHRISTINA REEG BAYNE DUFFY
1871 – 1956

One of the first female business owners on Main Street near the Bell Tower in what is now the Placerville News Company.

FRANK P. FAUSEL
1881 – 1903

He was a miner when an underground tragedy struck him down just a few days before his 23rd birthday.

JESSE CHRISTIAN HENNINGSEN
1876 – 1952

Came from Germany and worked tirelessly as a successful trucker, lumber mill worker and miner. He won’t tell the source of his good fortune – but his lunch box might be a factor!

JOHANNA PINTHER KANE
1861 - 1938

A century ago she led America’s first Suffragette march which fueled a movement leading to the passage of the 19th Amendment and the right of women to vote.

Pioneering businessman and local banker. Owner of what is now the Cary House on Main Street.
