Thanks to those who attended our South County Cemetery Tour in July of this year. Mike Roberts, president of Save the Graves and ardent taphophile lead the tour.

We visited three spectacular and historic south county cemeteries. The group gathered at Caffe Santoro before walking across the street to the historic Diamond Springs Cemetery and its gorgeous early headstone carvings.

Next up was the Fairplay Cemetery which may be the most idyllic rural cemetery in El Dorado County.

Last but certainly not least was Indian Diggins to learn about the state’s first marble quarry, the town that grew up around it, and the cemetery that was left behind. Hidden deep in the forest, Indian Diggins Cemetery contains the most concentrated examples of the distinct, blue-veined marble the quarry was known for. The last part of the road to Indian Diggins was challenging but the group consolidated into high clearance vehicles and pushed on to the cemetery. And we even made time for a much needed headstone cleaning.

Several in the group stayed for an optional lunch at TooGood Estates in Fairplay.
