Event Details

Join us in July for a driving tour to three spectacular and historic south county cemeteries. We’ll start in Diamond Springs, then caravan/carpool to Fairplay, then push on to the remote Indian Diggings Cemetery. Mike Roberts, president of Save the Graves and ardent taphophile will lead the tour.

Muster at Caffe Santoro in Diamond Springs at 9am. We’ll walk across the street and learn about the historic Diamond Springs Cemetery and its gorgeous early headstone carvings. At 9:45 we’ll return to Santoro’s, pick up stragglers and caravan/carpool to Fairplay. The Fairplay Cemetery may be the most idyllic rural cemetery in El Dorado County. Then it’s off to Indian Diggings to learn about the state’s first marble quarry, the town that grew up around it, and the cemetery that was left behind. Hidden deep in the forest, Indian Diggins Cemetery contains the most concentrated examples of the distinct, blue-veined marble the quarry was known for.

Our last stop will be around 1:30 pm in Fairplay for an optional lunch at TooGood Estates.

This Save the Graves free event is open to all ages. Advance registration is required. High clearance vehicles recommended on Indian Diggins Road. Wear sturdy shoes. Terrain is irregular.
